Veggies & Herbs

Starting Labor Day weekend we will be carrying vegetable seeds and starter packs. We will also have all other supplies you need to start a vegetable and/or herb garden.

For those of you in a deed restricted home you can easily grow vegetables in containers on your lanai or pool deck with great results.

To prepare the beds you will need:

- Our rich landscape soil blend

- Organic Fertrell fertilizers

- Plastic sheets to solarize the soil

- Dolomite/Agricultural Limestone

- Shovels, Rakes & Pitchforks

To care for the plants:

- Organic pest and disease control

Water or Not?

In the last month I can not count the number of customers who have brought in wilted plant material. Most of these issues are water related and it is 50/50 on too much or too little.

Proper watering is the most important thing that plants need. New OR Old.

Every situation is different and should be treated so. There is no definitive watering schedule. (I.E. If you plant that tree it has to be watered every day for 4 weeks.) It varies from plant to plant and yard to yard. Please consult with us when you purchase a plant on proper watering and care.

Another issue we are seeing is that customers are bringing in plants that are burned by a chemical substance. Herbicides, oil based insecticides & chemical fertilizers are all things that can cause a plant to look burned and wilted when they are improperly applied to your yard.

If you have a plant that looks like it is wilting (and you can't figure out why) or burnt please bring in a piece so one of our knowledgeable staff members can properly identify the issue and help you to reach a solution.

Aphids, Scale, Mealy Bugs & Whitefly

The heat and rain are here and so are the pests. As plants start to develop large growth spurts in the summer months they are prone to bugs that love to suck the juices out of that new growth.

Aphids are one of the most common pests found on new tender growth as they crawl around and stick their tongues in to drain the new leaves of fluid. they reproduce and spread at a very rapid rate but are very easy to get rid of.

Scale can come in two types(Hardscale & Softscale) and many shapes and sizes. Neither one is mobile once they stick their tongues onto the plant material. Scale can occur on both old new growth AND old growth.

Mealy bugs are usually very obvious as they settle in the nodes, where leaves develop from the branches, and they make nests that resemble a cottony substance. They are very mobile and crawl around the plant laying eggs and making more nests. If not treated right away they can infest a large area in very little time.

Whitefly is a very pesty nuisance when it infests your plants. They lay eggs all over the new and old growth and as they hatch and grow they suck the juices from the plant. Whitefly can spread extremely rapidly and IMMEDIATE action is required to help keep it under control and eradicate it.

All of these pests secrete a substance called 'honeydew' that is sweet and clear. After a while the honeydew starts to develop a moldy substance that resembles soot in nature, 'sooty mold'. The mold is actually a byproduct of the infestation and will go away once the pests are treated properly.

For proper identification and treatment please cut off a piece of any plant material that looks infested or even questionable and place it in a zip-lock bag, then bring it to us for an analysis. We have many fine professionals that are well versed in pests and their treatment.

Thrips

Thrips are another one of the many common pests found in florida plants. They can be introduced to your yard in a variety of ways. They can travel on strong wind gusts or even on your clothing and tools. While it is hard to prevent them from infesting your plant material it is easy to control and eradicate them once they have been properly identified and the right products are used.

Thrips normally occur on the soft fleshy petals of new flowers and leaves and can even get on some species of softer fruit. The affected parts of the plants usually yellow, blacken and shrivel up which causes them to look almost like a chemical burn. It can happen very quickly so a lot of people mistake it for a burn and not an insect infestation. Conserve Naturalyte is one of the best products to use to get rid of these pests. It is a natural product that will also work well for infestations of worms and beetles.

If you think your plants might have Thrips on them please cut off a piece and put it in a ziplock bag and bring it in to the nursery so we can confirm it and get you the right products to take care of it.

Time To Trim

We all know you're tired of all that unsightly brown on your plants and trees. March is here and that means its time to start pruning back dead branches and trimming up your shrubs.

Palm Trees - Trim off any frond that is completely brown. If it is only half brown you can cut the brown part off but leave the green half of the frond as it is still producing nutrients for the tree.

Shrubs - You can trim anything that is dead off your shrubs. When in doubt scratch the trunk of the area you want to cut to see if it is green and alive or dead and brown. A good rule to follow is never remove more than 30-50% of green plant material on your shrubs.

For shrubs that are green and healthy you can trim them back to keep them shapely and sized to your liking.

Happy New Years From Mariposa Nursery

Taking Care of

Cold Damaged Plants

Well another year and another set of hard frost. We would like to remind everyone of a few key things to keep your burnt plants alive.

Shrubs - Do not trim your shrubs back until early spring (March 15th is usually a good time)

The brown dead material might look unsightly but it will act as an insulator in the next couple months in case we have more cold.

Palm Trees - You should treat your palm trees with a manganese sulfate and liquid copper mix. Come on in to get our brochure with the application rates.

Mulch It Up

While the weather isn't stifling hot, its a great time to take advantage and remulch your landscaping. We offer high quality mulches in larger bags than the big box stores, so you save money.

Smaller Trees for Your Yard

It is always a challenge to find a small tree in Florida that doesn't grow to monstrous sizes. We thought we would offer you a choice of smaller growing trees that can be maintained at reasonable sizes.

Bougainvillea Trees - Fast growing, frequent blooming tree that is both salt and drought tolerant.

Torulosa Juniper - A cold hardy conifer that has a twisted structure. Great for a specimen or as a barrier.

Dwarf Poinciana - A multi-trunk large shrub that gets 12' with beautiful orange/red blooms on and off through out the year. Drought Tolerant

Cassia surratensis - A frequently blooming, yellow flowered tree that gets up to 15' tall.

Weeping Willow - A water loving tree that can get 25-30'. Weeping habit and thin branching structure make it great for ponds and other wet areas.

Bottlebrush - A cold hardy tree or bush that can get 15-20'. Blooms on and off through out the year with red pipe-cleaner like flowers. Drought tolerant

Hibiscus - Frequently blooming tree with a multitude of colors to choose from. Easy to trim to keep sized at a comfortable height.

Jathropa - Frequently blooming tree with red clusters of flowers that are butterfly attractive. Drought and salt tolerant. Easy to trim and keep sized at a comfortable height.

Golden Rain Tree - A 20' deciduous tree that blooms with yellow flowers in the fall and is followed up by pink seed pods in the winter.

Orange Geiger - A semi-cold hardy Texas native that blooms with beautiful orange flowers 2-3 times per year and is followed with a white olive-like fruit. Salt and drought tolerant. Easy Care

Pooldeck Perfection

As the summer heat takes it toll, I'm sure most of you have been spending a lot of time in and around your pool. Inevitably you notice the little spots here and there that can be spruced up by adding a small accent plant or a specimen plant for color and texture. Below I have listed a few plants that are ideal to add color and variety without the added mess of planting flowering shrubs in your pool area.

Bromeliads - Pineapple plant relatives. They usually only get a couple feet in height and have a clumping habit. Very little maitenance and care are required.

Snake Plant - Very traditional houseplant, but it makes a great potted plant in a planter on the lanai. 2-3 feet in height. Very little maitenance and care are required.

Peperomia - A slow growing, slightly spreading plant that gets 6 inches to 2 feet in height, depending on the variety. Requires very little maintenance or care.

Pothos - A fast spreading groundcover and trailing plant that only gets 6 inches tall but can be trained to climb things. Requires some trimming to keep it under control.

Anthuriums - A moderate growing, clumping plant that can get 1-3 foot in height depending on the variety. Colorful, non-messy blossoms throughout the year in pinks, reds and whites. Great for containers and planters.

Caladiums - A deciduous perennial that reaches 2 foot in height. Colorful foliage all summer. Dies back in the winter but does not need to be dug up like the caladiums up north. They will return every Spring.

Crotons - A good old Florida favorite. Crotons are slow to fast growing and get anywhere from 1 foot to 5 feet in height depending on the variety you buy. Easy to care for, they require a little trimming to keep shapely.

Arboricola - A moderate to fast growing plant that gets 4-5 feet in height. A little trimming is required for maintenance of shape and size.

Heliconia - A fast growing runner running plant that gets 3-6 feet tall depending on the variety. The color also depends on variety you buy. Great for planters and pots. Blooms frequently in the summer months.

A Bamboo For Every Situation

A Bamboo For Every Situation

Bamboo is a very useful plant in your landscape. It can be used in a variety of ways to accentuate different aspects of your yard.

As an accent it can break up a monotonous hedge row or tree line. As a specimen it can give a powerful statement. Even as a simple hedge it can be used to block sound and wind from annoying roads and open areas.

When most people think of bamboo they think of fast paced, overtaking runners with no constraints to how far they can spread and how much area they can take over. When I think of bamboo I think of the clumping varieties that are easily controllable and yet still reach the height and thicknesss of their spreading brethren.

At Mariposa Nursery we ONLY carry CLUMPING bamboo.

To determine what type of bamboo you want there are a few questions you have to ask.

First - How tall is the maximum height that you want when it is full grown?

Second - What type of use are you putting it to? Are you using it as an accent, specimen, windbreak, etc...?

Third - Do You have the width/depth to handle the spread? Even though the base of a clumping bamboo takes years to spread out, the top does not. The tops are leafy & heavy so the shoots bend & lean over slightly causing the plant to look much fuller & take up much more space at the top.

Once you have determined that you have the right spot for a bamboo you can now begin to choose which type. These are the varieties that we carry because they seem to be the hardiest, most interesting & easiest to grow in your yard.

Golden Goddess - Bambusa multiplex 'Golden Goddess' - 10-15' That grows solid green with .5" culms. Great for screening

Alphonse Karr - Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr' - 20-30' That grows yellow with a green stripe with 1.5" culms. Another great screening bamboo.

Oldhamii - Bambusa oldhamii - 60-80' That grows solid green with 4-6" culms. Massive timber bamboo.

Textilis Gracilis - Bambusa textilis var. gracilis - 30-40' That grows green with 2" culms. Great specimen bamboo.

Blue Bamboo - Bambusa chungii - 30-40' That grows green with a blue powder coating & has 2" culms. VERY SHOWY specimen.

Dwarf Buddha Belly 'Wamin' - Bambusa vulgaris 'Wamin' 10' That grows green with large swellings at the nodes of the 3" culms. Great For Pots & Partial Shade. VERY SHOWY!

Asian Lemon - Bambusa eutaloides 'Viridivitatta' Asian Lemon - 20-25' That grows a peachy color when they first sprout then turn a yellow with a green stripe with 1" culms. New variety in Florida.

Mexican Weeping - Otatea acuminata aztecorum - 6-10' that grows a dark green with light green leaves on .25" culms. VERY SHOWY weeping habit that is a great accent or potted plant. Graceful movement in the wind.

Golden Hawaiian - Bambusa vulgaris 'Vitatta' - 35' That grows yellow with green stripes on 4" Culms. Great Windbreak. Very Sturdy. Not Cold Hardy Below 30

Angel Mist - Dendrocalamus minor amoenus - 35' That grows green with a white powder coating on the 3" culms. Great large specimen.

Black Timor - Bambusa lako - 30-40' That grows green then turns black as the 2.5-3" culms mature. VERY SHOWY. Not Cold Hardy Below 30

Sunburst - Bambusa variabalis viridistriata - 45' That grows yellow with a green stripe on 2.5" culms. Great cold hardy alternative to Golden Hawaiian variety.

A Fruit For You

I know many northerners miss their orchards from up north. Now you too can grow many of your favorite fruit trees in your yard. Stone fruit that requires low chill hours for Florida growth. Peaches, nectarines,

A Little Too Chilled Out

EVERY customer that walks through our doors seems to have the same issue this year, and understandably so. Plants are crispy critters after this winter's cold snaps. There are a few key things to remember as you look to refresh your yard's former glory.

First - Make sure the bottom of the shrubs do not already have green sprouts at the bottom . If they do not have signs of new growth after this next week or two, its probably time to rip out & replace.

Second - Check the top of each palm to see if there is green there. If so then you got a good chance it's coming back. If not make sure you tug on the center "spears"(The center shoots) and see if they come out or not. If they pull right out they are goners. If they are nice & firm give the palm a few more weeks to see if it doesn't green up once our weather warms up a little more.

Third - If you need to replace palms, trees or shrubs, take pictures & measurements of the areas and we will GLADLY help you design these with new plants that would be more cold tolerant.

Though we might have a large of supply of colorful & varying styles of pottery, we lacked a certain selection of yard statuary & water features. NO LONGER.

A Fungus Among Us

Lately it feels as if the skies have been trying to make up for the past few years of dry weather. With all this rain and previous drought a lot of that water is sitting on the top few feet of the soil for a long time, before penetrating into the ground.

This is going to start fungal issues in your lawns & plants. If there is a fungus starting to develop in your garden you will notice black spots start to appear on the leaves and decaying plant material, that starts in the center of the leaf, in a circular shape & works it way outwards.

We carry both Fertilome Systemic Fungicide for Plants & Bayer Fungus Control Granules for your lawn. If you believe that this is an issue in your yard we urge you to cut off a sample of the questionable material & bring it to us at the nursery for our official diagnosis.

Treat Your Sago Right

I was out in the yard today & noticed that the King Sago Palm by the poolside was blooming.

This is probably one of the most unique blooms that you'll see on a palm. There is no petals, stamens, or anthers that you can see. Just modified leaflets that will harden before the seedpods fully develop. While I was looking at the palm I noticed that there was a small amount of Cycad Scale starting to spread on the trunk. Its time to treat again.

Sago Palms should be treated with a Systemic Insecticidal Drench every 3 Months to prevent the scale from reoccuring. Even with the drench you still have small outbreaks of it every once in a while. The best thing to do is spray the leaves (topside & underside) & the trunk with Malathion Oil, Once A Week For 4 Weeks & treat the soil with the Systemic Insecticidal Drench.

This should keep your palms & even some of the surrounding plants Bug Free year round.

Lots a Pots

It took almost the entire nursery staff but we managed to cram all of the new pottery into the nursery. There are so many styles and sizes to choose from it's hard to imagine not being able to find the perfect one for the spot you have. If you patio needs a little color we got it. I read a book that used the term "zonal denial". It was in reference to those of us who need to grow plants that aren't suited well for our particular climate. I think the best way to do this with success is to grow in pots. During the occasional cold snap you get some extra color in the house. As I was leaving the nursery today I saw 3 pallets of pots being pulled in so come by and get some pots since we're running out of room! -Jeremy McGrew

I was thinking the other day about how many fruit producing plants we have at the nursery. I thought hard to come up with all of the rare things like Lychee's and Mango's when I realized I was skipping over some of the most important ones for Florida. STRAWBERRIES! After going over to check out some of the hanging baskets I saw something I had never seen before...a strawberry flower. Of course I knew they flowered since as Francois says, "All plants flower." And you know what comes after flowers on fruiting plants, fruit!

Let The Rains Begin

Well it seems to be the rainy season again (Yay!) And That means that it is time to start working in the yard. This is a great time to fertilize with a 12-4-12 Slow Release fertilizer to keep up the healthy growth and root developement all summer long. This will last 3-4 months so that means you won't need to reapply until the early fall. Also it is a good idea to apply some granular pre-emergent herbicide as you pull all those nasty weeds out so they don't regerminate and pop right back up again. Both of these products are available at our nursery and while you're there check out our fine 2-story gift shop. Complimentary wine & cheese served every Saturday.
